Backgammon Clubs & Tournaments
|
More than ever the number of backgammon clubs is rising week by week as the popularity of the game soars. The introduction of Internet backgammon tournaments has prompted smaller organizations to form groups or clubs to play in these tournaments to compete for the big prize money.
This collective effort seems to shorten the odds with supposedly the pot being divided between its members.
Playing in tournaments is going to always be more competitive than playing for fun, or for low stakes. The big players seize on the opportunity that these tournaments present and with the extra addition of one time poker players now turning to backgammon to fill their wallets the competition gets tougher with every match.
Tournament play has some interesting variations and tactics for playing, if you adopt a few of them, you could find yourself winning more matches both individually and as a team.
In the first instant, try to cut your losses to one or two points implementing a doubling strategy to avoid a gammon at all costs.
Use doubling, when you're close to the end of a set, if you need only one point don't double, winning the game will win the set.
Should the opposition be one point away from winning its logical play for you to double immediately (before your first roll). They will reluctantly accept, knowing the winner of the game wins the set.
The percentage on you winning now rises to 50%. By not doubling this reduces to 25% and you will need to win two games in a row.
When ahead of your opponent capitalize: this will give you a better chance of winning than doubling or accepting a double; behind in a set, double and accept a double with a lesser chance of winning than normal.
Be brave and bold and go for it.
